I have no idea, really, what it must be like to live one’s life as a black man, not a white man. We all hear stories, and we see reports on the news about how young black men, especially, are subjected to unfair treatment simply because people are afraid of them. Why is that? Young whites commit just as many crimes of violence against people as do African Americans. According to the FBI, in fact, 67.5 percent of rapes in 2017 were committed by whites, compared to 28.7 percent by blacks. Aggravated assault, it was 62.1 to 33.5 percent. Nevertheless, that fear is ingrained in many white people and it’s translated into how they view people of color. What must it be like to live with that? To be afraid to jog in your neighborhood for fear of being shot? To be afraid to get a simple traffic ticket? To face prejudice and discrimination in every turn of the road?In South Carolina, there is a young black man, Jaime Harrison, who brings those experiences to his uphill campaign against entrenched Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
