In this episode of the Lean to the Left podcast, the hosts, known as the Dixie Dems, dive into current political events and their implications. From Donald Trump's New York City hush money trial and its humorous courtroom anecdotes to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to overthrow House Speaker Mike Johnson, the discussion spans several states and topics. They humorously tackle the seriousness of politics, including abortion and immigration issues, while highlighting local political challenges and personal anecdotes about environmentalism and social issues. The episode also touches on the potential impacts of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s run and the Republican National Committee's strategies. Furthermore, a bizarre local story of alleged animal abuse leads to a broader discussion about societal issues. 00:00 Welcome to the Lean to the Left Podcast! 00:40 Turbulent Times in Politics: Trump's Trial and GOP Chaos 02:15 Diving into the Hush Money Trial: A Comedic Take 04:25 Political Updates and Candidate Focus 05:25 The Border Wall Debate and Immigration Insights 07:14 Electric Cars and Environmental Moves 19:16 Abortion and Immigration: Election Game Changers? 27:16 Wrapping Up with Local Politics and Personal Anecdotes Hey guys, welcome to the Lean to the Left podcast. Today we’re talking politics, and with me are Arthur Hill, from North Carolina, and Robert Thompson, from Georgia. I’m a Marylander transplanted into South Carolina, and together we’re the Dixie Dems. Arthur is vice chair of the Brunswick County, North Carolina, Democratic party. Robert is based in Atlanta and founded Peach News Now and its opinion podcast, Got Damn Liberals. Me, I live in Myrtle Beach, SC and spend my time hosting this podcast and producing the Lean to the Left blog site. So, we’re living in turbulent times. Donald Trump’s NYC hush money trial is underway, even as Sleepy Don nods off in the courtroom, where his fortune and future, even his freedom, could be decided. At least for now, #SleepyDon. #SleepyDonTheCon, and other variations, are far outdistancing #SleepyJoe on social media! And the Republicans? They are an absolute shit show, with their fearless leader tied up in court, there’s a revolt against House Speaker Mike Johnson underway, led by none other than Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene wants to oust Johnson because of his effort to devise foreign aid legislation aimed at helping both Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars. Insiders say the vote to oust Johnson will be called, but nobody has any idea who would replace him. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So, guys, what’s happening in your areas? Robert, since I brought up your favorite U.S. Rep, Marjorie Taylor Greene, why don’t you lead us off? What’s happening in the Georgia case against Trump? OK, Arthur, what’s happening in the Tarheel State? I know you’ve got some rightwing crazies upsetting things there, right? Here in South Carolina, the Republicans have successfully gerrymandered our Congressional Districts and the case is before the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the primary elections are June 11 with early voting starting May 28, so the same federal court that ruled that the Congressional district map is unconstitutional and discriminates against Black voters has also ruled that the state’s elections will be held under that plan, since the Supreme Court has yet to act. The case hinges on South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District held by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace. Last year, the same three-judge panel ordered South Carolina to redraw the district, which runs from Charleston to Hilton Head Island, after finding that the state used race as a proxy for partisan affiliation in violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. There are two Democrats running in the primary to challenge Mace, businessman Michael Moore and attorney Mac Deford. You can check out their Lean to the Left podcast interviews by visiting Podcast.leantotheleft.net. But the upcoming primary isn’t the only date of political importance in South Carolina, where Sen. Tim Scott, who seems to desperately want to be selected as Trump’s VP pick, has planned an early August wedding to his fiancée, Mindy Noce. That’s just weeks after the GOP national convention. There are cynics among us who suspect that Scott’s seemingly sudden urge to tie the knot is because he thinks it will bolster his chances to be picked by Trump. A wholesome, newly married Black Senator who wears his Christian religion on his sleeve would be the perfect match for the evil, misogynistic, Donald Trump Now, that’s important news, but it’s not all that’s happening here in SC, known for its dog-eat-dog politics. In fact, that’s exactly what happened, as Charity Fowler was arrested March 31 for alleged animal abuse after one of her dogs was seen eating another dog.
